The impact of Islamic terminology on language development (A pragmatic-semantic approach

Abstract

The idea for this research stemmed from considering the Islamic terms that the Holy Quran enriched in the Arabic language as a significant aspect of the language's semantic development. This development involved adding meanings previously unknown to the Arabs, such as angels, faith, disbelief, believer, and hypocrite, or imbuing them with new connotations beyond their original meanings, such as prayer, pilgrimage, and fasting.

This development was not merely accidental; rather, it aimed to establish objectives that would fulfill the interests of people in this life and hereafter, in the immediate present and the future. Scholars have termed these objectives of Islamic law (maqasid al-shari'ah) and their rulings related to the actions of those legally responsible, whether by obligation, choice, or legal stipulation, as ordained by God. This had a clear impact on the emergence of both the linguistic and legal meanings, as manifested in usage, necessitating research in several fields, including linguistics, discourse theory, Qur'anic exegesis, and Hadith.
