The Impact of Weak English Language Proficiency on International Research Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships

Abstract

This study examined the impact of weak English language proficiency on international research cooperation and sustainable partnerships among faculty members and researchers at the Libyan Center for Sustainable Development Research in Al-Khums. The study adopted a descriptive analytical approach and used a questionnaire administered to a sample of 50 participants. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, simple linear regression, independent samples t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The findings indicated that weak English proficiency represents a direct barrier to international publishing, conference participation, and the development of sustainable research partnerships. The regression results confirmed a statistically significant effect of English language weakness on international research cooperation. The study recommended establishing an academic proofreading and translation unit, implementing specialized English for Academic Purposes training programs, and strengthening international partnerships to improve institutional research competitiveness.
